File extension XPS stands for XML Paper Specification. Developed by Microsoft and formerly known as Metro, XPS provides specifications for a document’s printing layout and appearance. In design, XPS has similarities with PDF but the PostScript language that it is based on is XML. To open XPS files, XPS Viewer which is available with Windows Vista to open this files. In addition, XPS is available with the XPS Essentials Pack. This is compatible with Windows XP and is available for downloading from Microsoft. XPS files can also be opened by Nuance PDF Converter.

With XPS, color definition is simplified because support is provided for some specific colors therefore making it easy to produce images that bear the supported colors.
